FirstPromoter review: the verdict for a Stripe-billed SaaS
FirstPromoter is affiliate software built for subscription and SaaS companies. It tracks referral clicks with a script on your site, matches signups to billing events, and works out commissions from what your billing system reports. For a founder on Stripe with no partner team, that covers the core job in one tool: track, calculate and prepare payouts.
The trade-off sits in the plan ladder. FirstPromoter's pricing page sets plans by the monthly revenue your affiliates bring in, and its FAQ says the account moves to the next plan when that ceiling is passed. This review reads FirstPromoter's pricing page, home page and developer docs as published on October 23, 2026. Dollar amounts are left out; read them on the live plan cards.
Strengths FirstPromoter's own pages document
Each point below is stated on FirstPromoter's own pages and docs.
- Billing link: Stripe, Paddle, Chargebee, Recurly and Braintree are listed on every plan. For Stripe, the docs name the events it reads: successful invoice payments become sales, refunds and disputed charges reverse them, and a deleted subscription counts as a cancellation.
- Refund handling: the pricing grid lists automatic negative commissions on refunds, so a refunded customer does not leave a commission behind.
- Tracking choices: links on your own domain with no redirects, coupon codes created and synced in Stripe, direct URL tracking and sub-IDs. The docs give a default cookie life of 60 days, and the pricing grid says it can be set much longer.
- Commission rules: percentage or flat, paid for the customer's lifetime, a set number of months or a set number of payments, with rates by plan or product and up to three levels of recruited sub-affiliates.
- Payout tools: mass payouts, payout schedules with minimum thresholds, and W-9 and W-8BEN forms collected in the affiliate portal on every plan.
- A 14-day free trial that asks for no credit card, according to the pricing page.
Limits and poor fit for a first affiliate program
- Cost follows success. Plans are tied to monthly affiliate-driven revenue, and passing the ceiling moves the account up a tier. Budget for the next plan, not only the first.
- The entry plan is capped: up to 1,000 affiliates, 3 campaigns and no custom dashboard domain. A branded address for the affiliate portal starts on Business.
- Some tools sit only on Enterprise: white-labeling with custom CSS and JavaScript, single sign-on with activity logs, and managed auto payouts, which FirstPromoter says are for SaaS companies and need approval.
- Payouts from Stripe: the grid lists Stripe among mass-payout methods, while the Stripe integration page says paying affiliates directly from a Stripe account is not available at this time. Ask which statement applies to you.
- Report depth: the pricing and compare pages cite 22 data points per report, and the docs introduction says 18. Confirm the current number in the dashboard.
- Vendor-written comparisons: FirstPromoter's compare page calls itself the better choice over Rewardful. This review treats that as the vendor's position.
Plans and cost: what to check before you pay
FirstPromoter offers Starter, Business and Enterprise plans with monthly or yearly billing, and every plan starts with a 14-day free trial. Team members are unlimited on all of them. The FirstPromoter pricing guide sets out what each plan adds and how to work out a break-even point with your own numbers.
Before paying, also count what sits outside the plan: the commissions you owe affiliates and the fees your payout provider charges. The plan grid does not list payout-provider fees.
Who should start here and who should compare first
- Start with FirstPromoter if your billing runs on Stripe, Paddle, Chargebee, Recurly or Braintree and you want one tool for tracking, tax forms and payouts.
- Compare first if you want a trial longer than 14 days, a free starting tier, or a flat plan that is not tied to affiliate revenue. The software shortlist names options with each of those.
- Read FirstPromoter vs Rewardful if Stripe is your only billing system and setup speed matters most.
- Read how to start a SaaS affiliate program first if commission rules are still undecided.
