Before you start: prerequisites for a SaaS affiliate program
You can start a SaaS affiliate program without a partner team if four things are in place. Your billing system must report subscription payments, refunds and cancellations, because commissions follow those events. You need a plain offer for affiliates: who can join, what they earn and for how long. You need a payout route, such as PayPal, Wise or a bank transfer. And you need a short written policy on disclosure and brand rules. A tracking tool then connects these pieces, and the software shortlist names several for Stripe-billed companies.
This guide draws on vendor setup docs, Stripe's coupon documentation, the FTC endorsement guides and the IRS Form 1099-NEC page, all read on October 23, 2026. It is not legal or tax advice.
Setup steps: tool, commission rules, tracking and payouts
- Pick the tool and connect billing. FirstPromoter's quickstart runs: create an account, connect the billing provider, add the tracking script, test the integrations. Rewardful's launch guide runs: start the trial, connect Stripe, set payout currency and method, create a campaign, confirm setup. Both support Stripe.
- Set commission rules. Decide percentage or flat, one-time or recurring, and how long recurring lasts: a set number of months, a set number of payments or the customer's lifetime. Decide what happens on refunds and cancellations; FirstPromoter's grid lists automatic negative commissions on refunds.
- Set the cookie window and attribution. FirstPromoter's default cookie life is 60 days and can be changed, and Rewardful says you set your own cookie length. Choose first-click or last-click attribution, which both vendors list.
- Choose link or coupon tracking. Links need a script on your site, while coupon codes need none. Stripe separates a coupon, which defines the discount, from a promotion code, the customer-facing code that maps to it, and a coupon can apply once, for a set number of months or indefinitely.
- Set the payout routine. Pick a minimum payout amount and a waiting period before commissions become due, which Rewardful's guide lists as campaign settings, then fix one payment date each month.
Compliance basics: endorsement disclosure and tax forms
In the United States, the FTC's endorsement guides say that a connection between an endorser and a seller that might materially affect how credible the endorsement is must be disclosed clearly and conspicuously when audiences do not expect it (16 CFR 255.5). The same guides say advertisers should give endorsers guidance on disclosing material connections, monitor their compliance and act on non-compliance (16 CFR 255.1). In practice, that means a one-page affiliate agreement and a disclosure rule you can point to.
On tax, the IRS says Form 1099-NEC is used to report nonemployee compensation. Payments to affiliates may fall under that form, so ask a tax adviser which affiliates to collect forms from and what reporting thresholds apply this year. FirstPromoter's grid lists W-9 and W-8BEN collection in its affiliate portal on every plan.
Test and launch: verify clicks, referrals and sales before inviting anyone
FirstPromoter's docs list three things to test: click tracking, referral tracking and sales tracking. Its Stripe setup can run in test mode as well as live mode. Run a check for each route you offer.
- Open an affiliate link in a clean browser and confirm the click appears.
- Sign up with a new email address and confirm it appears as a referral.
- Complete a checkout in Stripe test mode and confirm a sale and a commission are recorded.
- Refund that payment and confirm the commission reverses.
- Use a coupon code and confirm it credits the right affiliate.
- When every check passes, publish the signup link and invite the first affiliates by hand.
After launch: payouts, fraud checks and troubleshooting
Pay on a fixed date. Rewardful emails merchants on the first of each month when commissions are due, and its help center says it does not move the money unless you use optional Managed Payouts. FirstPromoter lists payout scheduling with minimum thresholds on every plan. Turn on self-referral detection, which both vendors list, and set approval rules for large payouts.
If commissions go missing, check three things in order: whether the script loads on the landing page, whether the signup call sends the email address, and whether the billing event reached the tool. The FirstPromoter pricing guide shows how to cost the whole launch, and the FirstPromoter review covers one tool in detail.
